go ahead, ask if my twins are natural

Every time we go to Costco, I count the twins. So far, the record is seven sets in one trip. Seven sets of twins in one store at the same time. It's like families find out they're having twins and immediately decide that along with a double stroller and a gargantuan nursing pillow, they also need to stock up on mega boxes of corndogs and huge vats of cottage cheese. Or maybe it's the fact that if you go to Costco on Saturdays, you can feed lunch to your entire family by way of free samples. Or it could be the extra large carts. But I suppose it's probably the cheap wine.

And it's not just Costco, of course. Now that I have a set of my own, I'm realizing twins are everywhere. And despite the fact that having two babies at once is a rather common occurrence, the novelty factor remains. And people are curious. Strangers ask whether my boys are twins, then whether they're identical. They tell us we have our hands full. And then the brave ones...or the ones who don't care about being politically correct...ask if they're natural...

  1. I love this! I am very forward with disclosing that my baby is from IVF, when asked. Of course it's not so obvious since he is not a twin, but I often come forward and tell twin mamas, because I figure they can relate. I am also proud that we worked so hard to have our precious baby. He will always know how wanted he was.
It gets trickier because I used donor egg. While I have no shame, this is a bit more complicated, and I feel it's his story to decide whether or not to share. So I leave that part out, but I have mixed feelings about it.

  2. I don't have twins, but all 4 of my babies are not "natural" and I love that question too.... I love to show people that they can have babies if they look for fertility help!

  3. This is great. A family at church had twins the same way.

  4. I love when people are open about the IF. I am almost too open, but do so in case the other person is facing something similar and needs to vent, connect, share, etc. I don't know why people get so pissy over that question, but whatever! We're all entitled to our own feelings.

  5. As always, I love your outlook! I have never been shy about our infertility journey, but this still gives me another positive way to put a spin on it! By the way, I love Costco because it is one of few stores that have carts to fit the twins!

  8. Love this! I used to be so ashamed of my infertility, but now (2 babies later) I love to shout it from the rooftops and share the hope! So many people I know and love have confided their own fertility woes with me since I started sharing and I wouldn't have it any other way. And I completely love that I had to fight and suffer for these babies.. Makes me appreciate them more, even in the hard moments.
